Personal Note:
I am a proud Montanan. My family has been on the Flathead Indian Reservation from the very beginning. I am a distant grandson to Jocko Finely, the namesake for the Jocko valley. My Great Grandmother came to the Mission Valley with Chief Charlo in 1891.

Growing up in Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation was the greatest place on earth. As part of a very large extended family, I felt as though I was related to almost everyone in the state. My dad was the town mayor for many years, my mom was the Tribal Clerk of Court, my Grandpa Vic was the Tribal judge and several cousins were the tribal officers.

I married my beautiful wife Peggy on a Saturday following her UM graduation and we moved to Nashville on a Sunday. We didn’t know one person in Nashville. We never heard of termites, humidity or grits! Within three months I had signed a record deal with CBS Records and had a world wide hit one year later. Nashville was at it’s peak when we first arrived in 1987. Music Row was like a small college campus. Peggy and I quickly got to enjoy many of the legends of music. I got to write with the greatest writers of all time and performed with many of country music’s legends. When I signed with CBS records, Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson and I were all the newest
Nashville artists.

One night while I was in the middle of a year long tour, somewhere in Louisiana, I realized that I wasn’t made for the gypsy lifestyle
of a touring artist. I didn’t like being away from Peggy , my son Matt and daughter Ray Ray. Peggy and I decided it would be best if
I focused more on writing songs for other artists allowing me to spend more time in Montana, hiking , camping, and coaching my
kids in sports.

This decision turned out to be the best thing I ever did. Sure, I missed performing as the artist, but Peggy and I got to enjoy the
important things in life.

Together we founded the Mission Valley Scholarship Foundation, one of Montana’s premier Golf Tournaments and Hall of Fame
Writer’s night's. To date, our foundation has awarded over 200,000 in financial scholarships to Mission Valley students attending
Montana colleges.
